The Prestige

starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman

This movie is one of the most surprising movies I’ve seen in a long time.  I didn’t expect much out of it, since it stars Batman the 3rd (or 4th, I lost count).  Bale, however, is a surprisingly good actor and this movie is one of the best-made modern movies I’ve seen in a while.

The plot is thick with intrigue, suspense, tricks and deadfalls, and more.  The whole thing hinges on a woman and two magicians.  The Prestige is the finale, the best trick ever, the showcase of the show that makes the audience not only wonder how the magician could possibly have pulled it off, but defies any explanation beyond the supernatural.

In this, the two prestidigitators excel.

More than that, though, it’s about an obsessive quest to outdo one another and one man’s obsession with finding a way to steal his rival’s trick, only to be accused and sentenced for murder.

It’s hard to explain this movie further without totally divulging the plot and ruining it for anyone who hasn’t seen it. So I’ll leave it here.  This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in quite a while.  Definitely worth seeing, I highly recommend this one.
